Houston County backs Marques by about 28 points; Figures wins AL-02

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) - Unofficial results show 64% of Houston County voters backed Republican Rhett Marques on Tuesday, compared with 36% for Democratic incumbent Shomari Figures. The county vote was not enough for Marques to win Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, which Figures won.

In Houston County, Marques received more than 20,000 votes to Figures’ 11,000.

Figures won four county precincts, including Walton Park and Wiregrass Park.

Figures captured the district with roughly 55% of the total vote.

Republican lawmakers redrew the 2nd District this spring following a U.S. Supreme Court voting rights ruling. The redrawn map stretches from Dothan to Montgomery. In 2024, voters within the new boundaries backed President Donald Trump by 14 points.

In his concession speech, Marques pointed to Montgomery County, the district’s biggest population center.

“Unfortunately, it did not go our way tonight. You know, it’s one of those things where the 2nd Congressional District, the people spoke. Montgomery County came out in a large number, and we couldn’t overcome it,” said state Rep. Rhett Marques, the Republican candidate in the 2nd District.

Marques said he personally called Figures to congratulate him on the win.

Figures had a message for voters who did not cast a ballot for him or did not vote at all.

“It is our prayer and our hope that those who did not vote for us or those who did not vote will understand the sincerity that we have and our desire to want to represent you as well. And so what you need is important to us as well. And we’re going to be there working for you every single day in Washington as well,” said U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, the Democratic incumbent in the 2nd District.

Figures begins his second term in January, representing all of Houston County.
