Figures defeats Marques to hold AL-02 congressional seat

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVY) - Democrat Shomari Figures won a dramatic race for Congress on Tuesday, turning back a Republican challenge to hold Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District.

Figures defeated Republican hopeful Rhett Marquez, who conceded defeat as election returns solidified Figures’ advantage.

After early, see-saw returns on election night, Figures pulled ahead and never relinquished the lead. His victory was fueled by an overwhelming performance in Montgomery County, where he captured more than 70% of the vote.

Republicans had targeted the seat, believing redistricting made the district vulnerable to a GOP flip. However, high turnout in key Democratic strongholds propelled Figures across the finish line even as election workers continued tallying remaining ballots.
