AP projects passage on 3 of 4 Alabama constitutional amendment ballot measures
The last amendment has a slim ‘yes’ lead
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama residents weighed in on four possible amendments to the state’s constitution Tuesday.
The results on three of the four remain are now clear, but one amendment’s vote tally remains too close to call, as of Wednesday afternoon.
AMENDMENT 1
This amendment has passed. About 66% of voters gave their approval, and the measure was passing by a wide margin with 97% of votes totaled Wednesday afternoon.
Amendment 1 asked voters to change the process for filling a vacancy in the lieutenant governor’s office if the position becomes vacant during the first two years of a four-year term; Would also add a new provision to the state constitution authorizing the state legislature to set the salaries of the lieutenant governor and members of the legislature.
AMENDMENT 2
The Associated Press has not yet projected whether this bill will pass. As of Wednesday afternoon, ‘yes’ votes were ahead by a 51/49 margin with 97% of votes totaled.
Amendment 2 asked voters if they want to allow neighboring county school boards to pursue consolidation through a resolution, although the proposal would not merge school systems automatically. The proposal also provides a way for local residents to protest a proposed consolidation if they disagree with it.
AMENDMENT 3
The Associated Press projects this amendment will pass. It had ‘yes’ votes ahead by a 63/37 margin Wednesday afternoon, with 99% of the vote tallied.
Amendment 3 asked voters if they want to change the state’s constitution to require local boards of education to adopt policies requiring all public K-12 schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and to adopt a policy allowing for student-initiated, student-led prayer.
AMENDMENT 4
The Associated Press projects this amendment will pass, with ‘yes’ votes ahead by a 59/41 margin Wednesday afternoon, with 99% of the vote tallied.
