MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVY) - After being elected to serve in the role earlier this year, Rep. Paul Lee, R-Dothan, will continue on as majority leader in the Alabama State House.

Following an internal caucus process, Lee was reelected to a full term in the major leadership position within the Alabama Legislature on Wednesday afternoon during a meeting of the House GOP.

“It is an absolute honor to be elected by my fellow House GOP members to serve as their Majority Leader,” Lee said. “The strength of our caucus is not found in any one individual, but rather in the unique, God-given abilities each member brings to the table.”

“Leader Lee stepped up to serve this caucus last session not out of personal ambition, but because his fellow members had the confidence in him to lead,” said Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter. “That speaks volumes about the kind of leader he is and the respect he has earned from his colleagues. I believe our members made an excellent choice today in electing him to his first full term as Majority Leader, and I look forward to continuing our work together.”

Lee was elected to the role for the first time in February after previous majority leader Rep. Scott Stadthagen, R-Hartselle, stepped down in the final year of his term while he campaigned for the chair position for the Alabama Republican Party, a position he now holds.

With a political career that began in 2005, Lee served until 2010 as a member of the Dothan City Commission before defeating longtime Rep. Joe Carothers that year to join the State House. He currently is the only representative that was a freshman from that 2010 election class that remains a member of the Alabama House.

From 2015 until his appointment as majority leader, Lee served as chair of the Alabama House Health Committee, which he had been a part of since his first year in Montgomery.

With the election decision on Wednesday, Lee will now serve as House Majority Leader until 2030.
