Tuberville projected to win Alabama governor’s race
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabamians voted for a new governor to succeed term-limited Kay Ivey, who held the state’s chief executive role for 10 years.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville gave his victory speech Tuesday night despite no major network projecting him the winner at that point. His opponent, Democrat Doug Jones addressed his supporters shortly after, but said he was waiting until more totals came in overnight before making any decisions Wednesday morning.
Just before 12:45am, however, the Associated Press made its projection official that Tuberville will win the governor’s mansion.
Tuberville was winning 52% to 48% against Jones, as of 12:30am with 97% of the vote tallied.
Tuberville was once the head football coach for the Auburn Tigers and other college football teams before returning to Alabama to serve in the U.S. Senate. He won the seat in 2021 but opted not to seek re-election.
He beat fellow Republican candidates Ken McFeeters and Will Santivasci to clinch the GOP nomination for governor, even as lawsuits claimed he didn’t meet the state’s residency requirements to run.
Tuberville moved on to the general election over the summer and saw the Alabama Supreme Court dismiss the final claim.
Tuberville did not debate his opponent during this election cycle and was not made available for a sit-down interview ahead of the election.
His team referred to a previously released ‘Back to Basics: The Golden Age Playbook,’ outlining his policy priorities.
Jones previously served as Alabama’s junior U.S. Senator from 2018 to 2021 before losing the seat by nearly 20 points to then-political newcomer Tuberville.
Tuesday’s race was a rematch of the two men for Alabama’s highest office, with Jones beating other Democrats, including Will Boyd, Jamel Brown, Yolanda Flowers, Chad ‘Chig’ Martin and Nathan Mathis, to clinch the state’s Democratic nomination.
This is a developing story that will be updated.
