Hundreds line up for free backpacks and supplies at Enterprise back-to-school event

ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WTVY) - A long line stretched out the doors and wrapped around the building Saturday at Enterprise State Community College, where a coalition of community partners worked to help children head back to class prepared.

Backpacks and school supplies were handed out during the Back-to-School Jamboree, along with food for families.

The need is widespread: A Kids In Need Foundation survey found more than half of students start the school year without all required materials, and about 20% lack essential supplies.

Organizers in the Enterprise area began teaming up five years ago to fill that gap, aiming to ease pressure on families and help students start the year with confidence.

The exact number of children served was not immediately available, but turnout appeared to be in the hundreds.
