Two killed in one Opp crash, second crash nearby results in injuries
OPP, Ala. (WTVY) - Two people were killed and two others were injured following one crash Thursday afternoon in Opp, with another happening nearby shortly thereafter that injured another two.
Police say officers were called around 1:08 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Florala Highway and the U.S. 84 bypass Investigators say a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500, driven by a 73-year-old woman from Andalusia, turned left on a red light into the path of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by a 72-year-old man from Troy.
A 75-year-old man riding as a passenger in the GMC, also from Andalusia, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 80-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Chevrolet, from Troy, also died at the scene.
Authorities say the GMC driver was airlifted to HCA Florida Fort Walton–Destin Hospital, and the Chevrolet driver was transported by ambulance and later airlifted to Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan.
Officials said the names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
While first responders were working the initial wreck and traffic was stopped, police say a second crash happened just west of the intersection.
Investigators say a 2022 Hyundai Elantra driven by a motorist from Elba failed to stop and hit a 2017 Nissan Rogue from Enterprise, pushing it into a 2017 Ram 1500 from Opp.
The drivers of the Hyundai and Nissan, along with a passenger in the Ram, were taken to a local hospital with injuries believed to be minor.
