Here’s where the next Sphere will be built in the US
(KVVU/Gray News) — If you have ever wanted to visit the Las Vegas Sphere, you will soon have a chance to see a similar one on the East Coast.
On Sunday, Sphere Entertainment Co. announced its plans to develop a Sphere venue in the Washington, D.C., area.
The company announced that its first small-scale Sphere will be located at National Harbor in Maryland.
Located 15 minutes from Washington, D.C., National Harbor attracts more than 15 million visitors annually. The waterfront destination along the Potomac River offers entertainment, dining, retail, gaming and convention facilities.
The proposed venue with 6,000 seats will be smaller than the one in Las Vegas, which has more than 17,000 seats.
Even at a smaller scale, the company said the new Sphere will provide the same immersive experience and jaw-dropping exterior that people know the Las Vegas Sphere for.
The project will receive approximately $200 million in state, local and private incentives, according to a joint announcement from Sphere Entertainment, the State of Maryland, Prince George’s County and Peterson Companies.
“Our focus has always been on creating a global network of Spheres across forward-looking cities,” said James L. Dolan, executive chairman and chief executive officer of Sphere Entertainment. “Sphere is a new experiential medium.”
The project is expected to support approximately 2,500 jobs during construction and 4,750 jobs once operational. Officials project the economic impact will exceed $1 billion annually once the venue opens.
“This will be one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George’s County history,” said Gov. Wes Moore.
It is not yet known when the new Sphere is scheduled to open.
The Las Vegas Sphere was recently ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s list of top-grossing venues worldwide.
Sphere Entertainment Co. has also planned a venue in Abu Dhabi as part of its global expansion.
