DALEVILLE, Ala. (WTVY) - Windham Elementary School had a special visitor at their annual Veterans Day celebration. That guest speaker was Alabama Governor Kay Ivey.

Daleville City Schools Superintendent Joshua Robertson says Governor Ivey’s agreeing to come to this ceremony was a pleasant surprise.

“It is a very momentous occasion to have the governor come to Daleville. To have her come here and choose us to speak to our students about more than just veterans, but number one honoring veterans,” Robertson said.

The school hosts this celebration every year, honoring the many veterans in the community who risked their lives for our nation’s freedom.

With the school’s proximity to Fort Novosel, this is especially meaningful to the school district.

“Fort Novosel is the lifeblood of everything we are here, so I would dare say that just about everyone that was in attendance is related to someone that is a veteran,” the superintendent said.

During the program, students cheered each veteran on in appreciation as each armed forces branch was recognized.

Robertson is glad to have had Governor Ivey be a part of a piece of Daleville tradition.

“Our whole community is built on that and just to have her here today, it is hard to put into words how appreciative we are to have her here,” he stated.

A tradition of appreciation to our nation’s heroes.

As a parting gift, both Daleville Mayor Jayme Stayton and Superintendent Robertson presented Governor Ivey with a city coin and a bronze Warhawk.
