Settlement reached with school after Jewish student gets swastika scratched into his skin

LAS VEGAS (KVVU/Gray News) - More than a year after a Jewish student in Las Vegas came home with a swastika scratched into his skin, a settlement has been reached.

The Lawfare Project announced Thursday that a settlement had been reached with the Clark County School District on behalf of the student.

“Today’s agreement is a step in the right direction towards holding CCSD accountable for its failure to ensure a Jewish autistic student’s safety and provide him with the special education he is entitled to under the law,” said Ziporah Reich, Director of Litigation at The Lawfare Project.

According to the boy’s mother, the 17-year-old student – who is autistic and nonverbal – came home from Clark High School with what appeared to be a swastika scratched into his back.

The mother said the boy wears a Yarmulke daily, the proper head covering for Jewish men.

The boy was pulled from school following the incident.

Lawyers representing the case say the student did not receive the special education support he was entitled to under federal and state regulations.

Last year, Heidari Law Group offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with the incident.

They add that the settlement will include monetary compensation and educational services outside of the school, to ensure the student has a safe environment to continue their education.

“Both the monetary compensation and educational services we have secured on behalf of the student will bring some measure of justice to the student and his family,” Reich said.
