DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- Staying cool is easy when you're inside in the A/C, but those with jobs outside in the extreme heat, need to make sure they are staying safe.
People who work outside are in direct sunlight, most of the day.
And the people WTVY's Carmen Fuentes spoke with say it's all about making preparations to keep from overheating,
Construction workers on Hwy 84 East are building up a ton of sweat.
In this heat, it's risky business.
And linemen who spend all day on power poles – know they've got to be prepared.
"you want to be equipped before you go to work," says Billy Watson
Watson says it starts with the right diet "high potassium. fruit, bananas, those kinds of things."
And while on the job - he's exposed to extreme heat and sun – but... "you want to be inside and out as much as you can."
He says the crews he works with look out for one another.
Keeping an eye out for indications of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
"You can see sometimes, the signs of people getting too hot."
And if someone is showing any signs of heat problems - they take action immediately
"Get them out of the heat, cool them down, bring them down slow and check their vitals and give them rest. Give them salt, sodium whatever they're missing."
