VERNON, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Vernon man is facing charges after deputies say he strangled and shot his wife.

Washington County Sheriff's Deputies got a call Wednesday night around 9:30 about a Moss Hill Road home. The caller said the victim had been shot in the chest by her husband, who was currently armed and barricaded in the home.

Deputies say when they got on scene, they found the victim hiding under the porch. Emergency personnel were able to pull her to safety and begin treating her. She was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition.

Deputies say just before the WCSO SWAT team made it into the home, they heard a gunshot inside. Deputies say the husband, David Reed, 71, was found in the kitchen with a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chest.

Emergency personnel took Reed to a local hospital for treatment. He is charged with attempted murder.
