Volunteers needed to fill brown bag meals for seniors

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - This time of the year is one of the busiest for the Wiregrass Food Bank, and they need your help.

Each year, the food bank provides 35-45 pounds of food for seniors 60 and older who are living at or below the poverty level. Right now, there are more than 1,600 clients being served by the Brown Bag Program.

These seniors primarily live off social security income and rely on the food bank to help them make ends meet.

"We try to provide these groceries to seniors at the end of the month so it will bridge the gap at the end of the month from one social security check to the next,” said development director Julie Gonzalez. “Also, to let them have enough nutritious food so they can concentrate on their other bills and medications that they have."

The distribution site in Dothan needs volunteers to pack bags on November 1st, 2nd and 9th from 7:30-11:00 AM. You can contact the Wiregrass Food Bank if you are interested at (334) 794-9775.
