Verizon helps local families with back to school

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) TCC ( an authorized Verizon Wireless retailer) is doing its part to make sure wiregrass students are ready for the new school year.

They donated 450 book bags filled with school supplies to local parents at two Verizon Wireless stores in Dothan.

And there was only one requirement. The child had to be present.

“It’s not a socioeconomic or a particular school group and really it doesn't even have to be a Verizon customer anybody can get a book bag for free,” says Wendy Jay a Verizon sales associate.

The bookbag drive helps ease the financial burden of back to school especially for those with big families.

“You have one kid no big deal... 2, 3, 4 kids that's close to getting two hundred dollars alone,” says Jay.

The kids got to choose from different designs.

“It looks pretty,” says Taylin Cole.

“I like it a lot and it's very beautiful with the colors in it,” says Jadison Cole.

“It's really pretty because my usual one was purple and it had my name on it and it was just boring and this one is actually colorful,” says Rilynn Dorminey.

The kids are ready to put their new supplies to use.

“I can draw with my crayons. I can use my notebooks for math and stuff,” says Davontay Whirl.

TCC knows that the book bags are more than just cool designs.

“Having a few things to go in gives them a boost of confidence,” says Jay.

So this is the company's way of paying it forward.

“They feel that we have blessed so well in the with the cellphone industry and our customers that they wanted to do something to give back to the community,” says Jay.

In total TCC donated 140,000 book bags nationwide.

Those 140,000 were only bookbags donated today. Since 2013, the organization has donated 950,000 backpacks.
