DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish and Investigator Taiwan Truitt came up with the idea of a Police Sports League to occupy children in their free time.

The league started with basketball where they have pick-up games at the Andrew Bell Recreational Center at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, but Truitt and the rest of Dothan Police Department are starting baseball teams with the city of Dothan, cake decorating and djing with local djs.

"If we educate these kids, we give them something positive to do,” Dothan Police Investigator Taiwan Truitt said. “That minimizes their opportunity to be out in the street breaking into cars, breaking into houses or even carrying guns, participating in any violent crime."

Registration for baseball in the Police Sports League for children from t-ball to 12-years-old is open until January 18th.

You can register at the Dothan Police Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
