On Monday representatives of the Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention (ADCANP) held a presentation to formally announce $838,900 in grants from the Children's Trust Fund being distributed to 19 programs throughout the state's U.S. House District 1, which includes Baldwin, Clarke, Escambia, Mobile, Washington and Monroe counties.

It was the second of seven such ceremonies, one for each district. The check presentation for District 2 will be Nov. 28th. The statewide total is $7,121,547, which will go to a variety of agencies to fund a spectrum of programs aimed preventing or correcting situations in which children may be exposed to neglect or injury.

As representatives of District 1 recipient groups gathered in Mobile on Tuesday morning, ADCANP Director Sallye Longshore said that while child abuse often makes headlines, it's harder to quantify the number of cases that are prevented. But she said she was confident that partner agencies were making a difference.

"We know that through education and support we are preventing it," she said.

The full list of recipients can be viewed at the department's website.

Longshore said that the grants are based on a two-year cycle, meaning that the grants being announced this year will be repeated next year, assuming that funding is available and that the recipient organizations continue to qualify. She said she hopes funding increases.

District 2: $1,829,861 (Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Coffee, Conecuh, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Elmore, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lowndes, Montgomery and Pike counties)
