Shred-A-Thon event brings awareness to identity theft

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- Canceled checks, expired credit cards and medical records.

Those were just a few items SunSouth Bank safely and securely shredded and recycled Friday.

The bank teamed up with Assured Data Destruction, a division of Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center, for the Document Shred-A-Thon.

The event was designed to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of properly disposing of sensitive documents.

Identity theft is on the rise, especially heading into the holiday shopping season.

However, if you did not get a chance to make Friday’s event, SunSouth is warning people to find a safe way to clear the clutter, while protecting your personal information.

“Well, I think we all know how dangerous it can be to have your personal information gone through or stolen,” said Social Director for SunSouth Bank, Leila McBrearty.

“There are always the bad guys that are trying to get your information so that they can perhaps open accounts in your name. Everybody just needs to be very careful about where they leave their information,” McBrearty warned.

SunSouth typically hosts Shred-A-Thon events twice a year.
The next one is planned for the spring.

But you can always take you r sensitive documents to WRC to have them safely destroyed.
