SCAM ALERT: Bogus lottery checks landing in mailboxes

COVINGTON COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) - Another scam alert from the Covington County District Attorney's office. This one has to do with bogus lottery checks being sent in the mail.

According to an official-looking letter, you've won the lottery and have been sent a small portion of your winnings. All you have to do is call for instructions.

The scammers then tell you to deposit the check and get a money order for about 85 percent of the deposit. You'll need it to collect the remainder of your winnings and pay the taxes and fees.

The check is bogus. If you receive one, you should not try to cash it.
