Ozark (WTVY)-- A Newton woman will serve an eight year prison sentence for stealing about $40,000 from a retired school teacher.
After pleading guilty to Financial Exploitation of the Elderly, 25-year old Maciah Lewis had hoped for an alternative sentence.
Dale County Circuit Judge Kimberly Clark denied that request Tuesday. Lewis immediately went to jail and will be transferred to a women's penitentiary soon.
District Attorney Kirke Adams believes that's where she should be, given circumstances of the case.
He claims Lewis hatched a scheme that convinced the 77-year former teacher that money she gave Lewis were loans with repayment guaranteed. Adams said Lewis also used a relative to reassure the victim.
“She gave the victim the phone number of a purported company that assured her that the money would be paid back.” A relative of Lewis answered that call, Adams said.
“It's one of the worst cases I've seen as a prosecutor. (Lewis) stole money from a sweet, retired educator,” Adams said.
