MARIANNA, Fla. (WJHG) -- A man is facing retail theft charges after authorities say he attempted to shoplift hundreds of dollars worth of grocery items.

The Marianna Police Department says they received an anonymous call Monday about an interaction between a Winn Dixie employee and a male shopper. A description of the suspect was relayed to patrol officers who located the subject and identified him as Cecil Highsmith.

After speaking with Winn Dixie management, an investigation determined that Highsmith had entered the Winn Dixie and placed a large number of grocery items and beer into a shopping cart and then left the store without paying. When confronted by management, Highsmith discarded the cart in the parking lot and ran away on foot.

An inventory of the shopping cart revealed $576.64 worth of steak, shrimp, crab legs, beer, and miscellaneous other food items.

Highsmith was charged with retail theft and resisting a merchant without violence and booked into the Jackson County Correction Facility to await first appearance.
