DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) — Wiregrass shoppers are shooting for savings and gun shop owners say they're seeing a lot of business.

Michael Tharp is an army veteran who owns several guns.

He served in Afghanistan in 2013 and 2014.

He says, "I learned a lot about my firearm and how well it protects."

Area 51 Products in Dothan saw sales go up this holiday.

Owner Dan Nicholson says, "We like being able to fit people to the gun and give them exactly what they need."

Gun stores aren't the only ones giving deals, manufacturers are offering cash rebates this week.

Most gun shops say this is one of the busiest days of the year.

Nicholson says, "The main reason is hunting or self-defense but more and more people are doing target shooting."

Tharp says safety is one thing he's always aware of and one of many things he learned serving our country

"I learned a lot of great team leader lessons, they always want to push you forward and I try to live by that."

For new gun owners, there are gun classes throughout the Wiregrass.

Trinity Defense in Pansey offers classes. Their number is 334-726-3080.
