DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) A local chimney sweep has been chosen from thousands of certified chimney technicians from across the country to sweep chimneys at America’s most famous address.

Cleveland Pope, owner of the Chimney Sweeps LLC in Dothan will be taking his talents and melodious voice to the White House this upcoming week. Once there, he will join a team of six sweepers and clean soot while inspecting The White House’s 32 working chimneys.

Pope has been sweeping chimneys for 30 years. He says this recognition, marks the pinnacle of his career.

"I would jump up and down but my arthritis kind of flared up so I'd probably hurt myself if I did that,” says Pope with a grin.

Pope is hopeful that through prayer and song, he can bring some goodness to the capital, and encourage lawmakers to work together.

He was chosen by others in his industry, and a committee that ultimately made the final decision. He will return to the White House every year, until he retires.
Pope is doing this free of charge, and travel and stay in D.C are entirely on his own dime. He says it's a great way for him to give back to his country.

Work begins Monday and should wrap up by Thursday.
