DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) -- The Alabama primary election takes place on March 3rd but there are some deadlines you should be aware of before heading to the ballots.
The deadline to register to vote is Valentine's Day, February 14th, for Houston County.
The deadline to register for an absentee ballot is Thursday February 27th.
If you physically bring that ballot in it must be turned in by March 2nd.
If you plan on mailing that ballot in it must be received by Election Day on March 3rd.
Election Manager Carla Woodall says when it comes to ballots, time is of the essence.
“So if the last day is that five days prior to the election on that Thursday, and I get the application that day, I’m going to put it in the mail that afternoon. You’re not going to get it until Saturday.”
She continued “then you vote it that same day and get it back in the mail to me the same day and I’m going to hopefully have it by Tuesday.”
If no candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote then a run-off election will be held on Tuesday March 31st.
