Dr. Jack Hawkins named second longest serving public university chancellor in the country

Dr. Jack Hawkins at Troy University is the second longest serving chancellor at a public university in the United States.

"All of our students know that they're important, we know our students by name and not by number,” said Hawkins.

The students are always first on Dr. Jack Hawkins’ mind. Just ask students like Taylor Holt, who says the man's heart is always in the right place.

"He’s really involved with student life; he's interested in what we're doing and how we're succeeding. He's had an impact on me talking about my goals and aspirations and I know he has that relationship with other students as well."

Some of Hawkins' biggest accomplishments include more than $300 million invested in capital improvements. That's more than 30 buildings on four of Troy’s campuses.

"We’re not just building a wall; we're building a cathedral at Troy University.”

Not to mention a Trojan Fitness Center coming in 2019. Hawkins is also proud of the international programs offered through Troy. When he first came in 1989, there were 40 international students from 13 nations. Now, Troy enrolls more than 1,000 students from 76 nations, speaking more than 85 languages.

"We have literally become an international university and the focus is at a much higher level. That's good for our students because this is the world in which they'll have to compete.”

Something else he takes pride in, of course, is the campus.

"I believe today, we have the best students, faculty, and the most beautiful campuses in the history of Troy University."

And he plans on going stronger than ever before these next four years.

"What I want to continue to do is to work with our faculty and the communities that we serve and our students to reinforce the importance of values in one’s life."

One thing Dr. Hawkins hopes to see in the next couple years is a new health sciences and technology building.
