Dothan Leisure Services offers a therapeutic recreation program

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- Dothan Leisure Services is offering a therapeutic recreation program this summer, designed to teach intellectually challenged children and adults, life skills like cooking a meal.

It’s the 14th year for the cooking camp, and on Tuesday, the group learned how to make cinnamon rolls and pigs in a blanket.

“We’re trying to teach them to be independent young adults as they transition into the community and can do things on their own,” said Camp Director, Barbie Nelson.

“It’s fun and you get to meet new people and make new friends and learn how to do stuff that you know it’s okay to do and you won’t be scared to do it,” said Camper, Kimberly Howard.

Dothan Leisure Services offers therapeutic programs throughout the year.
