DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - It started off as a month long campaign to raise money for a good cause and now, it has gone into the New Year!

The Dothan Police Department started a "No Shave November" effort to raise money for Children's of Alabama. People could vote for their favorite officer's beard on DPD's Facebook page.

Their initial goal was to raise $25,000; they've surpassed that and raised $27,116. The department owes this year’s success to the public for their support.

“Many of our commissioners, the mayor, the city manager, businesses and citizens of Dothan opened up their pocket books and checkbooks right before the holidays and gave us money," said Captain Bubba Ott.

In addition to the men growing out their beards, the women get to paint their finger nails. The department will continue this campaign through March.
