DCS cell phone policy drafts would make cell phone use a Class III Offense

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - The Dothan City School Board is nearing a vote on a new cell phone policy.

Wednesday, the system posted three new drafts, all prohibiting cell phone use on campus during school hours.

The new policies would all make the use of a cell phone a Class III Offense with some variety of suspension.

It's worth noting that sexual misconduct, use of tobacco and threatening violence against another student is only considered Class II.

The Director of Safety, Security And Attendance Scott Faulk defended the class three designation at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

"We have had major issues with cell phone usage in the school systems and we're trying to get a little bit of control on that to make sure students understand, 'You're here to get an education. You're not here to check your social media,’" said Faulk.

The drafts will go before the board on either the 15th or the 19th at a regularly scheduled meeting.
