COVINGTON COUNTY, Ala. (WTVY) - The Covington County District Attorney's office is aware of two phone scams in the area.
The first has to do with income taxes. People receive an automated message telling them to call (760) 428-9736 to avoid arrest. If you call the number, you're directed to a group of people who are not the IRS. Remember, the IRS will only contact you by mail.
The second phone scam making the rounds is designed to play on your emotions. The caller tells the intended victim a loved one is in jail and will not be released until a payment is made over the phone.
If you get either of these types of calls, just hang up.
