DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - December through February is considered the coldest time of the year.
The lowest monthly average for January temperatures in Dothan typically falls around 52 degrees which is about 10 degrees higher than what we have recently seen.
As January began, extreme conditions have hit the Wiregrass, making outdoor workers such as firefighters, Utility workers and Construction workers jobs that much harder.
They've started taking extra precautions to stay warm.
"Typically I bring a pair of long johns and an extra t-shirt."
-- Ferrel Gas Worker
The recent temperature drop is especially rough on firefighters.
"It's a little different for us, we deal with hot weather so much that we do take extra precautions when we do have extremely cold temperatures like we have this week. Reminding our people to dress in layers, make sure that they bring their heavy coat and their toboggans and things of that nature. And then watching our work-rest cycles when we are out at working incidents."
-- Chris Etheridge, Fire Marshall, Dothan Fire Department
To protect your employees, OSHA recommends scheduling work for the warmest part of the day. Also -- avoid exhaustion because energy is needed to keep muscles warm. And use the buddy system -- so one worker can recognize dangers signs of illness and injury.
