ELBA, Ala. (WTVY) - New classrooms and a new gym may be coming to Coffee County schools soon.

The school board heard a proposal from McGee and Associates to expand New Brockton Elementary and New Brockton High as well as build a new gym at Zion Chapel.

The gym's bathrooms could be accessed from the football field and the basketball court, which will help with maintenance costs.

The elementary school would get a new building with 12 classrooms and the high school would get 6 classrooms.

"For the safety of our staff and our students, everyone on campus, since we have to build those classrooms to make them storm shelters,” said Coffee County Schools Superintendent Kevin Killingsworth.

The board hasn't made a decision on the new classrooms yet.

In the meantime, they will add two more temporary classrooms at the elementary school.
