Dothan church older than the city itself

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) — First Freewill Baptist Church of Dothan was founded in 1867, just two years after the War Between the States ended.

Since then, it has endured two world wars, the Great Depression, and other tragic historical events. While other churches have come and gone, First Freewill has remained strong. Sunday, the church celebrated its 150th birthday.

"First Freewill Baptist Church started before Dothan was ever actually a city”, Senior Pastor Steve Trail said.

Hannah Siemans was among the congregation that gave thanks for endurance. "It’s special because my grandparents actually started coming to this church years and years and years ago.” Siemens’ daughter represents a fourth generation of members.

Perhaps the most enduring person in the congregation of First Free Will Baptist is local clothier Ronnie Brown who has been a member over six decades. "I was just taking a walk down memory lane, seeing so many people that I have known over the years who've been a part of this church and then their family grew up in the church.”

First Freewill Baptist Church is at 1467 Timbers Drive.
