Blakely woman reflects on how Hurricane Michael affected her wedding nearly a year ago

BLAKELY, Ga. (WTVY) - As we close in on the anniversary of Hurricane Michael, one Blakely woman is also approaching her first wedding anniversary.

She planned on getting married just over a week after Hurricane Michael.

Ashton Temples spends her days slinging pies at Village Pizza in Blakely.

This time last year, she was spending her days planning her wedding.

We all know planning a wedding is no small task, especially when a Category 5 hurricane pops up just over a week in advance.

"Of course it was discouraging, but everybody pulled together and made things happen in a better way," said Temples.

Ashton and her fiancé, Justin, had to delay the big day by about a month because of the damage from the storm.

The wedding was supposed to be on family property, so it took that long to clean up and get ready all over again.

"It flooded our venue,” said Temples. “We had tons of palm trees blown down and destroyed. We couldn't get to the arch my father-in-law had made for us. It was just - there was no way we could save it in time."

While Ashton will always be reminded of Hurricane Michael when she thinks of her wedding day, the memories aren't all tarnished.

"I don't think it was really about the wedding,” said Temples. “It was about who was there and who supported you and who I was getting married to. It all came together in the end. Even though the hurricane was horrible, it all ended well."

A lesson for Ashton and Justin to reflect on as they celebrate their first wedding anniversary.
