Black History Month events kick off in Ozark

By  |

Ozark, AL Black history month is being celebrated in Ozark with a series of weekly forums.

The first forum is Monday evening at the Greater Sardis Missionary Baptist Church.
It will focus on segregation and Jim Crow.
Each week panelists will discuss pre and post civil rights era issues.
The forum is free and open to the public.
It's sponsored by the Dothan Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and the Dale County Alabama Democratic conference.

Antwan Hillsman, with the Alabama Democratic Conference says:
"I believe that this is an opportunity to connect black history to modern politics. I believe that we tend to have a narrative about it that starts and stops our progresses and assumes that those progresses are continuous and have a longevity that may not be earned by the circumstances."

The next forums:
February 13: First Missionary Baptist Church, Ozark, 6pm
February 20: St. Paul AME Church, Ozark, 6pm
February 27: Greater Sardis Missionary Baptist Church, Ozark, 6pm
