(NBC News Channel) -- The mercury is going up, which means pool season is almost upon us.

But before you jump in, a new government report shows that you need to be more careful.

According to the CDC, there were roughly over 4,500 hospital visits every year between 2008 and 2017 due to injuries from pool chemicals.

The most common ones were from inhaling chemical fumes, vapors or gases.

Over a third of the patients were children or teens, and over half of the incidents occurred at a home.

Experts say it is important to keep the chemicals out of reach of kids and teens, and to read and follow directions on the labels.
