UPDATE - Police Give Details About Opp Nightclub Shooting

OPP, AL -- An Elba man is facing murder and attempted murder charges. Kanavis Malik Cole is being held in the Covington County Jail on $1.5 million bond.

Cole is charged with fatally shooting Demetrice Hines and wounding several others during a birthday party at Little Harlem Nightclub in Opp early on Sunday morning. Hines, a 20-year-old from Opp, died from his wounds shortly after the shooting.

Opp Police Chief Mike McDonald says Cole allegedly began firing a handgun after being bumped on the dance floor. Witnesses say there were between 200-300 people inside the club at the time of the shooting.

Covington County District Attorney Walt Merrill says he does not believe this will be a death penalty case.


UPDATE: 23-year-old Kanavis Malik Cole will be charged with murder and attempted murder in the early morning shooting in Opp that left 20-year-old Demetrice Hines dead and four others injured.
Eyewitnesses describe it as several moments of sheer terror as a gunman opens fire in a crowded Opp night club at around 1:30 Sunday morning.

It happened at “The Little Harlem Club” on Hardin Street. Five people were shot. 20-year-old Demetrice Hines would die a short time later at a nearby hospital emergency room. The four others received non-life threatening injuries. The victim’s family did not wish to comment on their tragedy at this time.

Hines’ body has been transported to the State Department of Forensics for an autopsy. Opp police are expected to hold a news conference regarding the tragedy, Monday.
