Montgomery Turns Teal for Gynecological Cancer Awareness Day

Montgomery, Alabama – September 6, 2013 – The State Capitol in Montgomery will be lit in the color teal on September 6th to commemorate Gynecological Cancer Awareness Day. Gynecological cancers include ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group is sponsoring the event, which is intended to raise awareness of these gynecological cancers, their impact on Alabama, and the need for research and improved screening tests.

Speakers from across Alabama will include cancer survivors, current patients, family members who have lost loved ones and physicians who are involved in battling these diseases. Dr. Max Austin from the University of Alabama at Birmingham will discuss the current state of research, screening guidelines and treatments. Angela Dainas will speak on BRCA genetic testing and preemptive treatments, and Nan Galik will discuss support groups for those affected by these cancers. The evening will also feature a special remembrance ceremony for those who have lost their battle with these diseases.

State Representative Paul Demarco will attend as an honored guest. He will read a special proclamation from the Governor designating September 6th as Gynecological Cancer Awareness Day in Alabama, which coincides with September’s national designation as the Awareness Month for Ovarian and GYN Cancers. Supporters of GYN cancer awareness will travel from all parts of Alabama to participate in this second annual event.

The CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group based in Birmingham serves women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers, their families, friends, loved ones and the professionals who treat them. The group provides patient support activities in conjunction with several treatment centers in Alabama and also works throughout the year to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of GYN cancers.
