Abbeville day care owner arrested in spanking of child

Abbeville- The owner of a now closed Abbeville daycare was arrested late Tuesday in connection with the recent spanking of a child.

Police Chief Noel Vanlandingham confirmed that Mary Clark was taken into custody and charged with Torture and Willful Abuse of a Child and Felony Assault.

The investigation was launched about three weeks ago when cell phone video was brought to the attention of law enforcement. The video seems to show a child being repeatedly struck at the daycare. Due to poor quality, it’s difficult see who was administering the spanking. It is also not immediately clear is police believe she is the one administering the punishment.

J and M Daycare on Bryant Street was ordered closed by the Alabama Department of Human Resources. It apparently had a relationship with the agency to care for children. Comment from DHR was not immediately available.

Agency regulations require that, in most if not all cases, children under its care not been administered corporal punishment.
Vandlandingham said the child is under the age of 5.

He plans to release additional information Wednesday.
