Florida Panhandle Military Evacuation

Tens of thousands of military personnel are evacuating from the Florida Panhandle ahead of Hurricane Dennis.

They're taking along much of the war equipment that officials don't want to leave in harm's way.

Hurlburt Field is home to the Air Force's 16th Special Operations Wing. Many of the combat aircraft based here are on duty in Afghanistan or Iraq. The rest were flown to Arkansas's Little Rock Air Force Base for safety.

The base is under a mandatory evacuation for all 15-thousand airmen and their families. A few essential personnel are providing security and making last minute preparations for the approaching storm.

At nearby Eglin Air Force Base, about 20-thousand personnel were evacuated. Most of the airmen and their families are allowed to go wherever they would be safe. The Air Force is also providing shelter for some at military facilities in Georgia.

About 80 planes from Eglin were also flown to safety, most to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
