TROY, Alabama – Troy senior outfielder Joey Denison has been named the Community Coffee Sun Belt Baseball Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
In four games last week, the Troy-native hit a homer, a triple, two doubles, stole four bases, scored six runs and recorded a total of 11 RBIs. The bulk of those 11 came with a six-RBI performance Friday night against Tennessee Tech – the most by a Trojan in a single game since 2014.
He picked up one more RBI in Saturday’s middle game with the Golden Eagles, before closing out the weekend with a 2-for-3 day driving in three more runs on two doubles and scoring three runs in Troy’s thrilling 13-12 victory.
Denison leads Troy with 19 RBIs this season which ranks 13th nationally and third in the conference – only one shy of the two leaders.
Quotable – Troy head coach Mark Smartt
“Joey had a great week. The runs he drove in came at critical times in each game. Eight of them came with two outs in the inning and either tied the game or gave us the lead. I’m proud of him and his accomplishments and I’m looking forward to what he’ll do the rest of the season.”
Denison will lead the Trojans into a midweek battle with Samford Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field in Birmingham. First pitch between the two long-time, in-state foes is set for 6 p.m.
