(WTVY) -- Former Northview Basketball and Football star, Marquez White has etched his name into school history.
His #1 Basketball Jersey shared with Xavier Gibson has been retired, and for good reason.
White is the first and only Northview player to be recognized state-wide for his play on the court and football field in the same season. During his time at Northview, White only lost to rival Dothan High once.
His stats speak for themselves, but Coach Janasky Fleming's decision to retire the jersey goes above and beyond what happened on the court, it's about White's connection to the Wiregrass.
"You're talking about someone who is a sixth round pick of America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys," said Janasky Fleming. "And for him to be tangible for kids has been huge, he is big in the elementary and middle schools, and has been a mentor to the kids. He has brought a positive vibe to our whole community."
"Every time I come home I come back to Northview," says Marquez White."It means everything to me, Coach Fleming is one of my best friends. Cant even put it into words. I'm so happy he chose me and Xavier to get our jerseys retired."
Marquez White was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft and is hoping to make the 53-man roster in 2018.
