Referee who died at high school basketball game in Ozark identified

OZARK, Ala. (WTVY) — The referee who died at a high school basketball game in Ozark Monday night has been identified as 58-year-old Rodney Nowell of Troy.


According to the Dale County Coroner, Woody Hilboldt, initial reports indicate cardiac arrest was the primary reason for death.

Nowell passed away during a game Monday night between Dothan High and New Brockton at Carroll High School. He reportedly collapsed midway through the first quarter of the game.

According to sources, paramedics rushed the official off the court and preformed CPR- bringing the referee to the hospital where he later passed away.

News 4 Sports has contacted coaches and players from both teams who say they all saw this happen in a split second.

The game ended following the collapse of the official.
