Houston Academy hires Alabama high school football coaching legend as head coach

DOTHAN After eighteen straight losses over the last two years, Houston Academy Football needed a change, and a new coach to lead the charge.

On Monday afternoon, the Raiders announced the hiring of Alabama high school football coaching legend Jamie Riggs.

Riggs is the third winningest coach in AHSAA football history, compiling 305 wins at T.R. Miller and Opp over a 30 year span which included four state championships

Riggs retired as the head coach of T.R. Miller two years ago and will replace longtime Houston Academy head coach Jimmy Addison.

While he's been out of the game for a few years, he's ready to start from the bottom to build another football powerhouse.

"Well one thing I want to do is work kind of slow and kind of build some foundations," said Riggs. "Some foundations of toughness some foundations of effort, some foundations of enthusiam a little bit you know and work ethic and build some of those things and build some of those things slowly and hopefully if we do some of that right, then when we need them they'll be there to help us out so its kind of going to be a slow process but we want to get it run right."

Riggs needs just five more wins to surpass Waldon Tucker for second place on the state's all-time wins list.
