DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) — The Wiregrass Area Food Bank is critically low on non-perishable food and we need your help! Recently, the Food Bank has experienced three situations that have caused a severe drop in the amount of canned foods available: 1.) Because of the national trend toward healthier eating habits, the Food Bank receives mainly perishable food items as donations through Feeding America. This presents a challenge because many of the local organizations served by the Food Bank don’t have cold storage for their food pantries. 2.) Right now, the non-perishables Feeding America does have are being routed to Texas and Florida to help victims of the hurricanes. 3.) The Food Bank always experiences a shortage of canned goods during the summer because of the decrease in food drives over the vacation season. All of these factors have contributed to an approximately 200,000 pound shortfall for July through September in the Food Bank’s normal distribution.
The food bank has been stopping by for pick-ups throughout the month and so far the Waynesboro and Augusta libraries have brought in close to 2,000 pounds of food, which comes out to around 1,500 meals.
