DOTHAN, AL. (WTVY) - 19 National Junior College Athletic Association softball teams from across the country are competing right here in our back yard.
Robert A. Hillman lll, TMP. Director of Sales at the Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, says “We've got teams traveling from as far as Salt Lake City, Utah. They're coming together to try and compete with one another before the season starts to see where they are and where their strength and weaknesses are."
The goal of this tournament is to grow the sport of softball.
"Softball is one of the biggest sports that we have in the Southeast. We've got one of the absolute finest facilities here and a Parks and Rec/Dothan Leisure Services that's second to none. Any opportunity that we get to showcase how well we do things in Dothan, this is one we take advantage of," replied Hillman.
Saturday, there'll be a special guest at the invitational.
"Kasey Cooper will be here so we're looking forward to having her out as well. It's going to be a big day! It should be a sunny day so let’s fill the park out and has a lot of fun out-outs here,” said Hillman.
Coaches are pleased with the reception they've received.
Jimmy Hendrix Jr., Associate Head Softball Coach with Chipola College, says "The hospitality that we've been shown with the City of Dothan and the community...the restaurants, the hotels, even Encore who is doing our training for us."
Hendrix says coming back to Dothan is a special place for Chipola.
"Something like this with six fields, we can host a lot of teams. This year we have 19 teams from seven different states...it's just getting better," said Hendrix.
Hendrix says going into a tournament…his team's focus is solely on themselves.
"For us, it's really...we don't focus on other teams. We don't scout, we don't do any of that...we just try to do what we do and try to get perfect at that,” replied Hendrix.
If you are planning to attend the softball tournament, the cost to get in is $10.00. Children 12 and under will be allowed into the tournament for free.
