Veterans gather over concerns for healthcare

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -- They fought for their country and believe their healthcare system is failing them.

But dozens of veterans in Houston county aren't able to access Veteran Administrations for healthcare because of something called a choice card.

Max Roberts is a retired member of the U.S. Arm and he says "The Choice Card was set up so that if there wasn't a VA provider here local. If they could go to a regular doctor and get this taken care of at VA expense. However, it doesn't work."

The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) held a meeting for veterans at the Dothan-Houston County Library to allow them to air any grievances.

Linda Boyle is the director of the system, and she says that it's all focused on eligibility, and area.

She said "So part of that becomes with our care in the community is looking at what do we have available for you that you can use it CAVHCS at Montgomery or Tuskeegee or other places versus what do we have to want to do within the community."

The next meeting's location and time have not been announced at the time of publication.
