DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) — About a dozen shots were fired into a SUV Wednesday afternoon leaving its driver injured and a woman described as an innocent bystander also hurt.
“The shooting victim was waiting to pull onto Fortner Street from Virginia Avenue when the shots were fired. Trying to escape the barrage of gunfire, he pulled onto Fortner and into the path of an oncoming car causing a collision,” Dothan Police Lieutenant Will Glover said.
The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a Dothan hospital for treatment and is expected to survive. The woman did not appear seriously hurt.
“It could have been much worse,” Glover said.
A person of interest was arrested about a mile from the scene a short time later. There’s no immediate word on charges.
The incident forced Fortner Street to be closed as Wednesday night worshipers headed to Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
Names of those involved weren’t immediately available.
