DOTHAN, AL. (WTVY) - 40 years of service and a statue now named in his honor…this is Troy University's way of saying ‘thank you’ to Dr. Don Jeffrey.
"He has been a catalyst for our activities here in Dothan. He has served the university so well and in so many different ways. Its people like Don Jeffrey that you have to have in order to have an effective organization," says Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins.
Dr. Jeffrey, replied "It's not me; it's always about my students. It's about the faculty and the staff that's been here with me all these years...the ones that came before me, the ones that are here now, and the ones who will be here after me. It's those people that make these types of things happen."
First coming to Troy University in 1977…
"I served in that aquatic director position, teaching all types of aquatic courses that we brought to the university that we wrote the curriculum," says Jeffrey.
When Hawkins became chancellor in 1989, he had other plans for Jeffrey.
"He's exactly what we need in education," replied Hawkins.
Serving the student's needs is what Jeffrey aims to do.
"We're here to help them live their dreams as we are living our dreams," replied Jeffrey.
"I think Dr. Jeffrey has been such a good catalyst that we have a very good, solid foundation...We're a different university than we were 20-30-40 years ago. We continue to serve larger numbers but the high-tech has become as important to us as the high touch," says Hawkins.
Jeffrey says he wouldn't be where he is today without help along the way.
"As I said when I quoted John Kennedy...high tide floats all boats and as their boat rose my boat went up also at the same time," replied Jeffrey.
Dr. Jeffrey has served Troy University in a range of administrative and faculty positions.
Some of those positions include: Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, Vice Chancellor of the Global Campus, and Interim Dean of Various colleges on Troy's campuses.
Dr. Jeffrey holds a B.S. in Physical Education from Troy University.
