DOTHAN Ala.(WTVY)- One hundred and eighty-two days ago the Wiregrass United Way launched its annual campaign to raise two million eight hundred and seventy thousand dollars.

Today they told us not only did they meet the goal but they exceeded it.

The deadline for the goal was yesterday at 5 pm.

More than eight thousand people made a financial pledge to this campaign which put them one thousand dollars over the goal.

The Wiregrass Foundation made a challenge pledge with the United Way to give them an extra four hundred thousand dollars to help forty-two agencies with special projects.

Wiregrass United Way CEO Walter Hill said, “It was really hard this year but we kept explaining the needs in the community talking about our 42 agencies and the tremendous work they do here in Southeast Alabama and people kept responding over and over again. So it went down to the final day to reach our goal but it was well worth every second that every volunteer and staff put into it."

The Wiregrass United Way will deliver the checks over the next six weeks and decide how much money each agency will receive.
