Superintendent Edwards gives DCS updates

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - More questions were asked and answered Wednesday afternoon.

Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Edwards commented on the DCS consolidation plan saying, "Everything is on schedule.. we have been putting out tasks lists.. really since December. Everything that we have said we are going to do, we have done."

So what has she said would be done?

According to her plan, two high schools will be consolidated -- a preparatory school will be added and an early childhood learning center will be implemented -- all by next semester.

That may be a lot to do with little time, but so far, the pieces are coming together and they're moving in a timely manner.

"We do have a team, I just met with them last week, of architects, and other builders and roofers that are coming together and they're already working on the designs. And they have been submitted to the building commission ..."

Dr. Edwards says she hopes to pass the 2019-2020 school calendar this month, which would show a one week delayed start time to allow for last minute details.

Although they are on schedule for most changes, there are a few things that may take a little more time.

She says it's things like "adding elevators to the school.. because that takes a bit more of infrastructure changes.."

So what's next for the DCS changes?

"All the plans have been done in detail, so now its the execution of the plans.. We will be putting packages out for bids.. you'll see packages for Dothan High, Dothan Prep and the elementary.. and you will see them working.."

Once the plan was announced one of the biggest questions was what would happen to teachers as schools that are being shut down.

Dr. Edwards confirms most of the teachers have already met with their principals, faculty and staff.

The next step will be meet and greets with students and parents.

Dothan City Schools are also hiring for specialty teachers, especially Spanish teachers. If you are looking to apply you can contact the Dothan City School Board at 334-793-1397.
