Study: Marijuana can have long-term damaging effects on the brains of youth

(CNN) -- Marijuana can have long-term effects on the brains of young people.

A new Canadian study tracked the alcohol and marijuana use of nearly 4,000 7th graders for 4 years.

It showed marijuana was linked to problems with memory, self-control and reasoning, especially in males.

Alcohol use did not have the same effects, suggesting pot may cause more lasting damage.
